Welcome Friend or Visitor to a Journey I experienced back in mid-January 2011. The time was early morning light, a few days after my area began recovering from being Flooded.
The Scenes you will see are similar, but I felt each held its own feeling of mystery created by that morning's rich deep Fog....
Why you may wonder have I taken so long then to Post this event.... well the simple answer was during my research on Fog I discovered Fog isn't just Fog.
Fog isn't simply moisture being heavy and low.
Infact, Fog comes in a variety of designs I found out. Then with each new word I encountered describing Fog, I kept heading off into tangents.
I think I began to feel Fogged-down as Fog's Story unfolded, and though interesting, I felt quite blocked from finishing. Hence the delay in Posting of what I felt were a beautiful mood-filled set of photos from that morning's Fog Journey.
But....
There just may have been other reasons....
I recently did a Posting involving a Foggy Sunrise (actively connected to view if desired). Two special Friends within Blogland had Visited, leaving Notes expressing their thoughts and feelings about Fog.....
Cindy from Bug Safari - http://bugsafari.blogspot.com/ expressed not often having Fog where she resides, but did have some photos stored somewhere she would try to find.
And...
Laura from Forest Walk Art - http://forestwalkart.blogspot.com/ expressed her reasons for loving Fog.
They both inspired me to simply do the Post, even if I hadn't still put together all the information. So with respect, appreciation, admiration and love towards Cindy and Laura, I now fulfil this rather special occasion I experienced with One Misty Morning....
Next is me turning right and the Scene is East South East...
The row of Trees centrally to the right are various varieties of Mango Trees....
Then I walk along further South from where I was and turn to focus back towards the East ....
Next I've walked round the yard and focused towards the West...
On the left of the above Scene is what I call a Bush-Lemon Tree, because of its very rough thick wrinkly skin. On the right near the fence-post is Camphor Laurel... Cinnamomum camphora, from where I am given beautiful moments to photograph, even though Cinnamomum camphora is an introduced problem in many areas of Australia.
My photo isn't actually crooked, the Land slopes. I often find in photos the effect can seem exaggerated, even after I attempt straightening the photo afterwards in edit.
I leave my yard area and go for a walk along the road which is on the East side of the Property for the following images...
The above Scene is looking towards East over the neighbouring Property. The young Tree on the right is a species of Jacaranda, and as yet has not flowered, so I can not be sure which kind it is. I would presume it is the popular introduced Jacaranda from the Family Bignoniaceae, Native to Tropical and Subtropical regions of South America.
If it is, then when in flower there a sprays of soft light purple bell looking Flowers which Bees love, and if is the Jacaranda it seems to be, the Tree does really look beautiful fully grown and flowering.
I could simply ask the Keeper of the Property... which just may be the logical next step. The Scene often appears in my photos for Sunrises and Clouds so would be nice to know and share.
Next is looking towards East North East. I am on the other side of the same young Tree, focused towards the dam...
Sadly, that Land will in time be packed with Houses... oh well, at least for now these moments can still occur.
Again looking East North East over the same Property and its dam in the next photo....
Lastly is the view of the Trees surrounding the dam and the time is 5.42am....
I really do hope you have enjoyed your wander amid the Landscape of Trees filled with the mystery and beauty Fog gives. Ten minutes seems such a short time to my memory of the occasion. But then it was also very tranquil, so simply may have felt longer at the time.
Leaving the beauty behind and moving into some facts about Fog, I learnt there a quite a few different types of Fog.
Fog, being dependent upon the atmosphere cooling to cause the necessary condensation, enjoys various styles to create it self into from those conditions.
Clouds and Fog being condensed water droplets resulting from Air being cooled until the Air can no longer hold all the water it contains, means one can then consider Fog as a Cloud at ground level, even though the process forming each are different.
For Clouds to form it is the rising Air cooling which create them and their varieties.
For Fog.... well...
In general,
Rain cooling and moistening the Air near the ground causes Fog.
Then there are the variations Fog indulges in....
1. Advection Fog - the horizontal transferring of heat by Air causing Fog. The moist air passes over a cool surface by advection (wind) and is cooled.
2. Freezing Fog - this happens on Mountain Tops exposed to low Clouds. Liquid Fog droplets freeze to surfaces, forming white soft or hard rime. (rime... a thin coating of frost formed on cold objects exposed to Cloud or Fog)
3. Frozen Fog/Ice Fog - any kind of Fog where its droplets have frozen into very tiny crystals of ice in mid-air.
4. Garua Fog - which is nearly invisible, yet still challenges visibility. Occurs near the Coast of Chile and Peru.
5. Ground Fog - as the name implies, stays close to the Land with minimum obscurity of Sky and doesn't reach the base of any overhead Clouds.
6. Hail Fog - can occur in the vicinity of significant hail accumulation, due to decreased temperature and increased moisture, leading to saturation of a very shallow area near the ground's surface.
7. Precipitation or Frontal Fog - forms as precipitation falls into drier air below cloud. The liquid droplets evaporate into water-vapour. (precipitation... rain, snow or hail being formed by the condensation of moisture in the atmosphere and falling to the ground.)
8. Radiation Fog - is formed by the cooling of Land after Sunset by thermal (heat) radiation in calm conditions with a clear Sky. Like during Autumn/Fall and early Winter.
PS from me... I wonder if in time such Fog would be regarded as detrimental to one's well being. Autumn/Fall is one of the prettiest of Seasons, so I do so hope not.
9. Sea Smoke/Steam/Evaporation Fog - is the most localised and is created by colder air passing over warmer water or moist land.
10. Upslope/Hill Fog - form when winds blow Air up a slope, adiabatically cooling the air as it rises, thus causing the Air's moisture to condense. (adiabatic... without change in heat, a thermodynamic process that happens without gain or loss of heat.)
PS from me... almost a paradox as I read it.
11. Valley Fog - occurs mostly during Winter in Mountain Valleys. It is the result of a temperature inversion (reversal), caused by heavier cold air settling into a valley with warmer air passing over the Mountains.
Then there is..
12. Fog-Bank... a mass of thick Fog especially at Sea.
13. Fog-Bow.... a feint arc of light in Fog, seen opposite the Sun in Foggy conditions.
14. Fog-Dog... a bright white spot seen near the Horizon as Fog begins breaking.
And lastly....
15. Artificial Fog - created by vaporising a water and glycol-based or glycerine-based fluid. (glycol/ethylene glycol... is used in anti-freeze. It is a viscous colourless liquid, sweet to the taste.) (glycerine... is a thick, sweet, odourless, colourless or pale yellow liquid. Source is the oils and fats by-product of soap manufacture. Also used in anti-freeze, as well as cosmetics lubricants, solvents, plasticizer, manufacturing soap and dynamite.)
PS from me... I think I'll stay with Natural Fog.
Well I'm done. If there are any Fog forms I have omitted, my deepest apologies to Fog.
But... for me Fog will always be the mysterious feeling of beauty it gives. Fog can be dangerous to walk in if thick, and even more dangerous to drive in. It can be dangerous to be on a boat sailing in Fog. It can hide misdeeds being done, and make finding those lost difficult. Yet treated with respect, Fog is one of Earth's inspiringly beautiful events.
I am fortunate in being where I am at present to experience many Fog filled mornings. Even if sometimes half the morning's day-light will have passed before I am able to function outside properly. I really do quite love Fog.

With appreciation and good wishes to you
From Magda and Family.
I am very proud of my self in achieving this Post.
Henry, one of my beautiful, handsome Ganders died in my arms on 22 September 2011.... even writing that sentence hurts.
But as my Friend Laura from Forest Walk Art encourages... doing helps... and yes this accomplishment helps. When I'm ready I'll do a Post in honour of my Henry. I'm just not ready now.
Thank you to all who have helped me reach this moment, whether you realise you did or not. I am thankful.

magda...again...you have amazed me with your look into the FOG!
ReplyDelete((and as you mentioned...i do love fog...a mysterious cloak...)
i've enjoyed the stroll through your property...and was glad that you were there to guide...as i might have gotten lost in the fog...if not for you.
and...as always...you have done so much research! i NEVER knew there were so many kinds of FOG! i just always assumed...fog is fog. kind of like heavy misty air-rain.
NOW...when i pass thru some fog...i will be wondering...what kind is this?
i don't like the name of radiation fog...
ground fog sounds as though it should have legs and run across the field...
frontal fog sounds as if i should do a QUICK about face, it won't be there...but then it would be back-fog.
valley fog...sounds nice...i can picture the mountains rising up and holding the fog down there...
fog-dog...WooF!
i agree...i'll stick with the natural fog!
thanks for this lovely fog post...
i know it was hard for you to get on here...with all that you've been through over the past few months...
we're all here for you...know that!
xxxooo
Oh LAURA, you helped me laugh. Am so glad I have lived long enough to experience you. Am so glad I had the courage to Blog with Blogger and find you at your ForestWalkArt place. Every day and Every Night you forever become a more deeply treasured Friend. My whole heart I feel fill with emotions I never knew I had.
ReplyDeleteThank you for being you, and thank you for being a most wonderful Friend for me.
Love everything you've written...
Huge hugs of appreciation wonderful Friend, with love from me to you xxxx
Hi there - have just come back from some down on the coast - each morning and evening a kind of veil was pulled over the land as a sea mist of sort moved up from the surf - not a fog as such, maybe its younger brother! Images to follow.
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M
Thanks for all the information on fog and the different types of fog. But I especially thank you for your wonderful pictures. They are moody, mysterious and beautiful all at the same time. I hope that beautiful land will not be covered with houses, but at least you have preserved the beauty of the present.
ReplyDeleteso many beautiful foggy shots. :)
ReplyDeleteI am sure your Henry would enjoy the flight with the geeze. :)
Fog or mist adds something special to a scene doesn't it.
