Welcome To The 2nd Part Of Sharing With You,
Photos Of When Queensland's Flooding Time, During January 2011, Affected My Area...
The photos for this second part to my area I managed to do when access to Town became available on 13 January 2011. Gympie Southside had been flood bound since 9-10 January 2011. Not a lot of days like many other areas, but still held its own restrictiveness and concerns.
The following photos begin with my return journey from Town. I am not in the main part of Town for this doing. There was limited access to Gympie's main Township with clean-up in progress. The main part of Town nearest the Bridge I had recorded on 20 Dec 2010 (Gympie - "Heavy Rain Wake" 21 Dec 2010), is only about 9metres (about 25feet) above The Mary in normal times. So with the quantity of water occurring when Gympie flooded meant any areas of the Main Township near that Bridge were in trouble.
Access from Gympie's Southside on 13 January 2011 was only available via the Bridge nearest the Main Highway to and from Brisbane. That Main Highway was still closed when I did these photos.....
13 Jan 2011. This road I would usually travel coming to and from Town.
19 January 2011.
My faithful Betsy is parked on the left in this picture.
13 Jan 2011. I've turned and am looking right from previous photo. This view is towards Gympie's Main Highway leading to and from Brisbane. Also in direction to where Bridge giving access to and from Town for Gympie's Southside Folk at this time is located.
The next photo is the same location but done on 19 Jan 2011.
13 Jan 2011. Gympie's Main Highway to and from Brisbane.
13 Jan 2011. The Under pass leading to and from Brisbane on Gympie's Main Highway. This Underpass is 5metres (about 16.5ft) at it's higher side. I saw media photos showing The Mary's Waters filling that gap on 10 January 2011. The Overpass Path gives access to Town on left and to Southside on right. I was on the left side of the Overpass area when did previous photo. No traffic on Main Highway gave me the freedom to walk down and stand in the middle of it safely to do the same scene from this view . There is an access turn-off to left of this photo from Main Highway, enabling traffic too tall to go under to use and continue on to Brisbane from. Also gives local traffic access to the Overpass from Main Highway.
13 Jan 2011. I turned right while where I was for previous Underpass photo... and there's The Mary. About 15metres (about 45ft) depth of her on this occasion. One would not even see the water in usual times. I live on other side of the far distant Trees.
13 Jan 2011. I'm almost back up to the top of the Underpass looking towards the Bridge leading to Gympie's Southside.
And this is the Bridge which gave Gympie's Southside access to Town and back again. The Bridge is called The Normanby Bridge. Stands about 16metres (about 52.5ft) above The Mary. On 11 Jan 2011 The Mary peaked at 19.5metres (nearly 64ft). That is a massive amount of water when the usual quantity flowing is 2-5metres (6.5-16.5ft).
The traffic waiting visible on far right is road I turn onto. Is also road leading to other Bridge I mentioned in the introduction to this Story. And the same road I travelled on 8 Jan 2011, whose photo is in Part 3a of this Telling. Also is the Road to reach the Park whose photos also appear in the same 3a giving. As well as the Road I'll now be turning onto to return to my Clan.
I set my Car's counter to assess just how far The Mary had reached by 11 Jan 2011.... nearly 2kilometres (just over 1mile) to where I had done photos in Part 3a. Doesn't sound a lot... but it was. Visually an amazing sight to see. Quite daunting.
And it wouldn't feel right to not include a photo of The Mary in a state of abundant grandeur.....
13 Jan 2011. I parked when reached other side of The Normanby Bridge. There is no Pedestrian access over the Bridge. But I stayed close to edge regardless of traffic to achieve this. Had just completed the doing when yelled at by Traffic Guider to get off Bridge. Thankful Vivaz phone did so well with the one chance we were given. In essence this view is towards Brisbane. To left on other side of Trees is Gympie's Main Highway.
By 19 Jan 2011, The Mary had returned to her usual Self. Unfortunately I could not do a photo. I would have had to edge my way almost onto the centre of The Normanby Bridge before anything other than bedraggled Trees were visible. Was too risky with being a main Bridge for traffic. I doubt I could have outrun a vehicle. Worse if a massive truck came along while another vehicle came other way.... would have been minimum room left for me. I may have caused an accident, especially if did one of those scenes where one goes splat or fell off the Bridge at a crucial moment.
What I will write though was the sight that met my eyes with The Mary being back to normal as I slowed my driving while crossing The Normandy Bridge and glanced in the direction of the photo I had done of The Mary.... sad and sombre was the feeling. Much embankment was lost.... but the mud.... the whole feeling was awful. A dead feeling is my best description. And the smell, quite odious. My heart ached for all those folk who personally were experiencing and finding a way to cope with a magnitude far greater than what I was witnessing.
Gosh this was an overwhelming undertaking. I feel actually like crying right now with having completed the task I set my self.... oh how silly of me.... I am!!!
Thanks for visiting .... the final step in all this now is the Publishing and checking that it does look like the Preview....
