Jan 2011 Floods - Fourth Time Under For This Bridge

Welcome to my journey with January's 2011 floods happening in Queensland Australia,

This part of my summary, relevant to the December 2010 January 2011 floods, which travelled from North to South of the Eastern side of Australia, when reached my area of Queensland in earnest on 10 January 2011, involves photos a close friend sent to me.
The photos show the ongoing saga of the Bridge about an hour's drive North from me. What can I write other than that dear bridge, after going under a third time near the end of December 2010, had just emerged from flood waters on 2 January 2011 (Other Places and Topics... "And The Rain Continued..." 29 Dec 2010)(Title actively Links to Story) when by 8 January 2011 went under a fourth time. Deeper, and with flood waters being a lot more serious about their journey.....

Both Maps I sourced from the Bureau of Meteorology at http://www.bom.gov.au

To the Map of Australia showing Queensland in an orangy shade, I added a Blue Dot to indicate area this Story is set in.
On the zoomed in concept the larger Map represents, I've circled in Purple the Bridge's Town, and Town where I reside in Red.

8 January 2011, The Mary is up to 16 metres (about 52.5 ft) this time. About a metre (3ft) more than when Flood Waters last inundated the area at the end of December 2010

Other side of Eucalyptus Tree is connecting Road from Bridge. You can see a bit of Road Bitumen in foreground that would lead onto Bridge from Tiaro side.
One of the other Markers still manages to see daylight.

Really is a profound Mass of Water if you consider The Mary is usually about 2-5mtrs (6.5-16.5ft). Give consideration also that this photo of 8 Jan 2011 is showing the fourth dunking since December 2010 this Bridge has endured (well there is a Bridge under all that water). Then consider the Bridge is about 7mtrs (nearly 23ft above The Mary in usual times.... you can begin to fathom just how much water has been passing along just in this one region.
Overall the amount of Water that has been travelling along Eastern Australia during December 2010 and January 2011 is phenomenal. The Western side of Australia has also experienced flooding.
In simple terms, Australia has been having a thorough Cleansing by Water this Summer Season.

To see the outcome for This Bridge when about a week later it re-emerged from this present dunking.....

17 January 2011.... This time the bitumen is gone

Spine of Bridge damaged

This time also the Bridge looks tired. My personal opinion is if it has to endure another dunking it just may not re-emerge

Interestingly, my close Friend has recently informed me the Bridge has been declared safe enough to be utilized by traffic!!!!

To conclude this Summary are two further photos showing the after effects on the Park which was also included in that previous Posting (Other Places and Topics "And The Rain Continued..." 29 Dec 2010) (Title actively links here also)...

19 Jan 2011, the Trees indicate height the Flood Waters reached. Between gaps of Trees you can just see The Mary looking more like her normal Self.

A rather more picturesque view... though what is being shown is the erosion of the far bank. A considerable loss of land mass has occurred.

I appreciate my close Friend's permission to include these photos in my Flood Summary.

Curiously, before this last photo, the previous few photos exposure are in particular awkward looking. I mention curiously, because photos I had done had that same awkward exposure appearance. Anything I did to tame the look actually only made the look worse. I wonder if the Energy the Landscape exuded with finally being able to absorb Air again while coping with the smothering mud residue is what one is seeing without knowing one is seeing that.

  1. That's a lot of water! I can't imagine how much work must be going into checking all the bridges and roads that have been damaged and/or submerged following the January rains.

    1. Nothing like doing a clean-up..
Snail, after 3yrs I've finally returned to thank you for your visit.
My eyes widened as I saw I'd never replied.

Looking at this Post now and other Posts as work my way through the clean-up process, 2011 was certainly one huge year.
And now in 2014, most of dear Australia needs water.
Thankfully a dose fell at the end of March in the Gympie area and surrounds. Will help with having happened early in Autumn, not a lot, but better than going into Winter with the parched ground before. Still read your Blog Snail, still find myself laughing at the interactive events between you and the Wildlife and way you put it all succinctly into words.
      Thanks for still Blogging.
